How Do Men and Women Define Romance?

Last week’s poll uncovered an interesting new bit of information.  We asked which type of romance suits you best: sentimental, playful, reconnecting, steamy, or thoughtful.  Think you know the outcome?  I was surprised and I bet you will be too!

If I had to guess how the results would have turned out, I would have chosen “steamy” as the top answer for men and “sentimental” as the top answer for women.  So here we go – a phrase I don’t generally like to use – I was wrong.

As it turns out, men and women were fairly spread out across the board with each answer getting no less than 15% and no more than 23% of the responses.  Interestingly, men and women had nearly identical preferences, aside from one type of romance’s placement of importance.  For men, “thoughtful” was the favorite answer and for women it was “steamy”.  The results were as follows in order of most to least popular answer:

Men: thoughtful, steamy, playful, reconnecting, sentimental.Women: steamy, playful, thoughtful, reconnecting, sentimental.

Thoughtful romance for men is about focusing on the little things in their life.  Examples include breakfast in bed or tickets to the game.  Steamy romance for women is about connecting on a physical level.  Examples include a bath drawn for two or the bed remade with satin sheets.

Two good things came out of last week’s survey.  First off, I now know where I should focus my efforts when creating new romantic ideas for our community each week!  But more importantly, last week’s poll proved that people enjoy different types of romance.  The most important consideration in planning a romantic moment for your partner is to consider which type of romance they enjoy the most.  And if you don’t know which type of romantic they are, the best bets are to go with something thoughtful, steamy, or playful.
